Advanced IEP Chicago Lab assignment due by Monday, February 3rd @ 3pm

This is the lab assignment for my ADVANCED class in Chicago (which meets Mondays & Wednesdays from 5-10pm).

This assignment is due before our next class on Monday, February 3rd, by 3pm. I need to print your writing before class so we can start with peer revisions, so make sure they are posted/emailed by 3pm. If you ever have trouble with blog posts, just email me what you would post instead.

TASK 1:
By Monday, February 3rd, at 3pm, please send an email to hannahkovacs@csinow.com with the following two paragraphs (at least 5 sentences each) about your favorite kinds of art.
Here are some ideas about what to include:
What types of art do you like (painting, drawing, sculpture, photography, weaving, others)? What periods of art do you like (ancient, modern, contemporary, from a particular century)? What artists do you like, and where have you seen their work?

TASK 2:
Also by Monday, February 3rd, at 3pm, please write a new blog post with the following:
First, write at least 6 questions you will use to interview other students about their favorite kinds of art. Second, find somebody in lab and ask them these questions. Third, return to your post and report the person’s response for each of these questions. Remember what we learned about reported speech to write about what the person you interviewed said. (You can use World English 3 pages 64-65 to review the guidelines for reported speech).

All lab assignments are due by 3pm on the day of the class for which they are due.

Intermediate Lab Due Monday Feb 3 by 3PM

Please complete the following by 3pm Monday Feb 3rd:

Task 1: Write an email to me at hannahkovacs@csinow.com, and outline your idea for a podcast you will create in which you will review a movie, book, song, album, artist, restaurant, product, service, or place. If there is something else you would like to review, or you would like to make a podcast on another topic, that is fine. Just include in the email the specifics of what you will talk about for a 5-minute podcast. Your email should be at least 5 sentences, but the more you include the better!

Example email: "In my podcast, I will review my favorite album from the band, The Pixies. It is called Doolittle, and it has 15 songs. I will tell listeners my opinion of the best songs on the album, and for my 5 favorite songs, I will describe what the song's lyrics are about. I might want to interview other people for the podcast, playing a song for them and asking their opinion about it. Then I could report on what other people think of the album."

Task 2: Make a new post on your blog, and paste your outline from the email you sent me in this new post. Then, below the outline, decide on a Title for your podcast, and write a script for the introduction. Then publish your post.

Example post: (after you paste your outline from the email you sent)
Title: 'Artsy Album Reviews with Hannah K!'
Introduction script: "Hello everyone, and welcome to 'Artsy Album Reviews with Hannah K!' In this podcast, I review one of my favorite albums by one of my favorite artists of all time. Have any of you listeners out there heard of the band The Pixies? Well, if not, you are missing out! They are one of the coolest bands of all time, and I'm going to tell you a little bit about their 1989 album 'Doolittle.' So listen up, and I'll start by telling you a little bit about the history of the band...."

Task 3: After finishing the introduction script, start doing some research so you can include facts about the topic of you podcast. In my case, I would research when the band formed, where they started playing, how long it took them to get famous, when their first albums came out, etc. Take notes on your research in the bottom of your blog post, and then publish it.

Podcast Project!

For our next project, we are going to make a PODCAST! But first, we need to do a little research...

Read this page [http://www.howtopodcasttutorial.com/what-is-a-podcast.htm], and try to answer the questions below (just take notes on paper or in a word document, and then we will go over them together)

1. What is a podcast?
2. What can podcasts be about?
3. What are some common subjects for podcasts?

After answering the questions, try listening to one of the podcasts at NPR's Pop Culture Happy Hour using the link below. Click on the mp3 link by the podcast you want to listen to, and then wait with your headphones on. (It may take a few minutes to load).
http://www.npr.org/rss/podcast.php?id=510282

Take some notes on what you learn from the podcast, and we will discuss these together afterwards.

Advanced Lab Assignment Due Wednesday January 29th by 3pm

DUE WEDNESDAY 1/29 BY 3PM:

  • In an email to hannahkovacs@csinow.com, please complete the following writing assignment. After emailing your writing to me, please copy and paste it into a new blog post on your blog.
"Choose one location in your country where a survival school would work well. Write two paragraphs for an advertising brochure. In the first paragraph, describe the place and explain why it's a good location for the school. In the second paragraph, describe the things students do and learn."

Please complete the task above first. Then if you have not yet finished the previous assignments, you can do so now for partial credit:
Previously due:
  • Remember the hunger games trailer we watched in class, and in a new blog post write your responses to the questions below:
  1. As you watch the clip, think of 5 feelings that you would feel if you were in Katniss’ situation. Then write 5 sentences: Use the form “If…. , then….”
    • Ex:  If I were in the Hunger Games, then I would be scared.
  2. What if you were in a survival situation like Katniss?  If you had to choose 3 things to help you survive in the wilderness what would they be and why?  Write a short paragraph (at least 5 sentences) using the unreal conditional form giving clear descriptions and reasons.
    • Ex: If I had to choose 3 things to help me survive in the wilderness, the first one would be a knife. I would use the knife to protect myself.
    Task 2:
    • Edit your blog post on 3 wishes, using the corrections your peer reviewer made. If you do not have the corrections, please review your own post, check for errors, and edit it to fix them.
    • If you did not finish your post about 3 wishes, please finish it now and then comment on this blogpost (or email me) to tell me you have finished it.
BLOG POST TOPIC FROM LAST WEEK (FOR THOSE WHO DID NOT WRITE/FINISH IT YET): Write three paragraphs (at least 4 sentences each) each describing a wish you have. You could write one for your city, one for your country, and one for the world, or they could all be things you wish for yourself. Use the conditional forms we practiced in class.
    • Example paragraph: I wish there were more hours in the day. There's never enough time for me to finish all the things I want and need to do. If there were a few more hours in the day, I would be less tired and more energetic. I would get more sleep, and I would sleep better if I knew I had finished everything I had planned.
    Afterwards:
    • Register with Free Rice  so you can keep track of how much rice you've donated by practicing English vocabulary words.
    • Once you have registered, please complete the first level (60 vocab words correct).
    • Once you have gotten 60 vocab words correct, you can keep going with Free Rice or use the rest of your lab time for extra practice with Tell Me More, American Speech Sounds, and the ESL websites listed on the right-hand side of this blog.

Blog Setup!

Before following these instructions, please make sure you have finished the task from the post below ( setting up your csinow.edu account, checking your progress portal, and emailing me to confirm that you've done these two things).

Now, it's time to make a new blog!

Please go to http://www.blogger.com and make a new blog, following the instructions. You can choose whatever name and template you like, just make sure you link it to your email address so that you have all of the access information.

Once you've created the blog, please make a new post introducing yourself. Please don't use your full name (for privacy reasons) but do write about where you're from, why you're at the ESL academy, what you like to do in your free time, and what your plans and hopes are for this year.

Once you've finished this, you can either write more blog posts, customize your blog, or go to http://freerice.com/#/english-vocabulary/1476 and start practicing vocabulary and helping to end hunger.

Thanks everyone!

Setting up csinow.edu Email Accounts

STEP BY STEP ACCOUNT SET UP PROCESS.

1. Remember that there has been a username change – it is no longer first name/last name. Students will need to use their student ID instead. Your ID number is on your ID card. If you don't have that, please ask your
teacher for your ID number.

2. Students should login into their personal email account and open the email from noreply@csinow.com with the subject line “CSI email identity verification”.

3. Find this email, and click on the verification code link in the email - the “Student Verification and Password Reset” page will open.
• If the email is in spam folder – the link will not be clickable. The student will need to move the email to their inbox and then click on the verification code.
• In case student’s email client does not display the verification code as a clickable hyperlink, students can go to https://accounts.csinow.net/verification/ and copy and paste the verification code from the email.

4. Students will be prompted to enter verification information:
• Student ID Number
• Verification code from the email (can copy and paste from the email, if not displayed)
• Their DOB related credential (either date or month)

5.Students will click submit and if all entered information is correct and validated, the student will be asked to create a password (it must be at least 8 characters long).

6. If password is successfully created “Your password has been successfully set” message will appear.

ONCE YOU HAVE SET UP YOUR ACCOUNT:

1. Log out and go back to http://esl.csinow.edu/en/, click 'current students,' then the gmail link, and make sure you are able to log in that way.

2. Go back to the 'current students' section, and click "My Progress Portal". Please *Check that your name appears at the top of the page.* This portal is where you can check your attendance, grades, and other important information.

When you have successfully logged into your csinow.edu account and your progress portal, please send an email to hannahkovacs@csinow.com and confirm that you were able to do both of these things.

Thanks!!
